Alexis Harrison is an interdisciplinary social practitioner whose work starts with deep self reflection through her connection with nature. In her work, she integrates oral histories to express the poetics of life. Her work prioritizes co-creation as a means to build community.

Telling stories using photography, sound, and textiles, each medium Alexis uses she demonstrates ways of understanding the sense of place and heart of community, belonging, and longing. Influenced by the social practice of Theaster Gates, the images of Jamel Shabazz, the vibrant quilts of Bisa Butler, and the grounding words of bell hooks, Alexis’ work is influenced by nature’s rhythms that show up in how the collective moves through the world.

Alexis is committed to witnessing the way things work and how we live in right relationship with ourselves, our community, and the natural world. Alexis is currently building a creative practice via Homeplace Studio where she designs experiences where a joyful renewal, love for each other, and the world we dream of is possible.

PROJECT - JAZZ : COMMUNITY

Jazz : Community is a research-based co-creative series of gatherings where we pause to embody, create, and reflect on the mosaics of life Black residents in Central Brooklyn. Drawing on sentiments derived from jazz music - a genre of music that originates in Black communities -  community members will come together to interrogate and discuss their internal and external landscapes across Central Brooklyn. This process layers the experience of (being in) community across themes, emotions, and questions, and compiles the outcomes as collages of narratives and sounds. These collages ultimately serve as a demonstration project for how we reimagine the past to design a new future.
